MANAGEMENT ALGORITHM OF PRIMARY OPEN-ANGLE GLAUCOMA, Yordan Yordanov

Abstract: In primary open-angle glaucoma, risk factors are associated with an increased risk
of development or progression of the disease, showing variability depending on the
specificities in different countries. High-risk patients are considered those with a combination
of risk factors. Therefore the role of early diagnosis and regular follow-up is important.
The aim of the present study is to provide an algorithm of early diagnosis and management of
patients with POAG.
Material and methods: The study enrolled 302 patients diagnosed with primary open-angle
glaucoma treated in SBOBAL - Varna. For the evaluation were used sociological and clinical
methods. SPSS v. 20.0 was used for variation, dispersion, correlation, and risk assessment
analysis.
Results and Discussion: The results of our study showed that 43.70% of the patients
experienced glaucoma progression. There were highest difficulties in the treatment of patients
diagnosed at a very advanced stage, which as a consequence progression of glaucoma. This
lead to the development of an algorithm of early diagnose with effective and accurate
methods that will help specialists to choose the proper management plan for any glaucoma
patient. Conclusion: Based on a detailed analysis of the patients data that is related to the
diagnosis, treatment, quality of life and risk assessment of the disease prognosis, we present a
suggestion for management algorithm of POAG in accordance to patientsā€˜ needs and may be
optimized according to their behavior in case of early detection of change the causes
associated with the variation and maintenance of high IOP values.
