TRANSFUSION SYSTEM IN THE REPUBLIC OF BULGARIA AND THE PLACE OF OTH BURGAS IN IT, L. Zhelyazkova MD

Abstract: Blood transfusion and blood components are an essential part of modern intensive
care, which every year saves millions of people’s lives, in particular in modern medical
practices such as cardiac surgery, transplantology, hematology and oncology, emergency
medicine, etc. The goal of this report is to introduce the structure and functions of the current
Transfusion system and the place of OTH (Transfusion Hematology Department) Burgas in it.
Possibilitiesfor adjustments in current structure and functionality. Annual reports and analyses
on the activity of the Transfusion System in the country, normative documents and subnormative acts. The activity of OTH Burgas (Transfusion Hematology Department) in recent
years is comparable to that of some CTH (Transfusion Hematology Center) and far exceeds
that of other OTH. The presence of a Medical University in the city, providing medical staff
and availability of good material and technical base with opportunities for expansion are
favorable conditions for the transformation of OTH into CTH. The rapid development of highly
specialised medical activities based in 7 large hospitals in the district make this transformation
necessary. OTH (Department of Transfusion Hematology) Burgas is the largest OTH within
the country in terms of volume of activity, staff, area on which it is located, number of medical
establishments and territory it serves. There exist many favorable factors for the expansion
of its functions and its transformation into CTH ( Transfusion Hematology Centre) . If it
happens, OTH Burgas is capable of fully meeting the blood components' needs of all medical
institutions in the region.
Key words: Transfusion system, OTH, CTH.
